Atkinson, NH
Located in Rockingham County, the southern New Hampshire town of Atkinson has a rich history, dating back to the American Revolution. The town was named for Colonel Theodore Atkinson.
Incorporated in 1767, the town has been home to many historic buildings, including the oldest co-ed school in the country, Atkinson Academy. First a boys’ school, it began admitting girls in 1791. The building burnt down in 1802 was rebuilt a year later. Other historic buildings include the Atkinson Historical Society and Library and the Rockwell School. The town is home to relatives of former President John Quincy Adams.
Atkinson is comprised 11.1 square miles of land and 0.2 square miles of water, for a total area of 11.3 square miles. The highest point in Atkinson is Hog Hill, at 430 feet above sea level. Atkinson lies entirely within the Merrimack River watershed.
Atkinson’s population has grown rapidly, and has enjoyed the sixth highest 50-year percentage increase in population. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, there were 6,178 people residing in Atkinson, more than twelve times the population of 492 in the 1950’s. This included 2,317 households and 1,777 families. There were 2,431 homes, an average household size of 2.66 and an average family size of 3.08. The median income for a household in the town was $69,729, and the median income for a family was $77,631.
