Hampstead is located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. It is situated 30 miles from Concord, 30 miles from Portsmouth and 20 miles from Hampton Beach. It includes the town of East Hampstead. Island Pond is on the west, Angle Pond and Wash Ponds are on the west of Hampstead. Sunset Lake is also found in Hampstead, making it an attractive summer destination and summer camp location.
Hampstead’s historic Main street is lined with antique Colonial homes. The town is known as a picture-postcard town. It was first known as Timberlane Parish, due to its growth of native trees. The town was renamed Hampstead in 1749, by Governor Benning Wentworth.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Hampstead’s population at the time was 8,297 people. This included 3,044 households, 2,279 families and 3,276 homes. The average family size was 3.19 and the average household size was 2.72. Hampstead is comprised of 13.3 square miles of land and 0.7 square miles of water.
